6.1 Paleopathology Disease in the Past

Votes:0
6.1 PALEOPATHOLOGY/DISEASE IN THE PAST Anthropologists often obtain data on health, disease, and death from ancient populations using the methods of paleopathology, the study of ancient disease. Paleopathology not only gives us a glimpse into conditions in ancient populations. It also contributes to our evolutionary perspective of disease. By looking at populations in different environments over time, we may be able to gain insights into the long-term relationships of human biology, culture, and disease. An example of the use of paleopathology is to document changing patterns of disease and health that took place during the transition from hunting and gathering to agriculture during human history. The primary source of paleopathological information is skeletal remains. Inspection of bones Read More

Statement by the American Association of Physical Anthropologists on the Secretary of Interior's Letter of 21 September 2000 Regarding Cultural Affiliation of Kennewick Man 20 October 2000 The American Association of Physical Anthropologists (AAPA), the largest professional scientific organization devoted to the study of physical anthropology in the United States, was part of the coalition of Native American and scientific groups that worked for the passage of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA). Since the passage of the act a decade ago, the AAPA has continued to support NAGPRA's key goal of ensuring that culturally affiliated, federally recognized Native American groups are allowed to make decisions regarding the disposition of their ancestral remains. AAPA Statement on Biological Aspects of Race

AAPA Statement on Biological Aspects of Race Published in the American Journal of Physical Anthropology , vol. 101, pp 569-570, 1996 PREAMBLE As scientists who study human evolution and variation, we believe that we have an obligation to share with other scientists and the general public our current understanding of the structure of human variation from a biological perspective. Popular conceptualizations of race are derived from 19th and early 20th century scientific formulations. These old racial categories were based on externally visible traits, primarily skin color, features of the face, and the shape and size of the head and body, and the underlying skeleton. They were often imbued with nonbiological attributes, based on social constructions of race. These categories of race are root Read More

Bonobo (Pygmy Chimpanzee)

Votes:0
Bonobo ( Pan paniscus ) Bonobos were not officially identified as a species seperate from common chimpanzees until the 1920's. They are in fact much more than little chimpanzees. Humans and Bonobos share between 99 and 99.6% of their genetic makeup. Their lack of agressiveness and excitability (quite unlike chimpanzees) is thought to perhaps be more similar to the first humans. There is also growing evidence that bonobos may be as different from chimpanzees as chimps are to gorillas. One can only imagine to what extent this will be realized as more is learned about the lives of bonobos. status: ENDANGERED Distinguishing Characteristics Black, a white patch on tail region for juvenilles as well as adults. Hair on head often parts down the middle. While bonobos are not noticably smaller than Read More

Bonobo Sex and Society

Bonobo Sex and Society The behavior of a close relative challenges assumptions about male supremacy in human evolution by Frans B. M. de Waal (Originally published in the March 1995 issue of SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN , pp. 82-88) At a juncture in history during which women are seeking equality with men, science arrives with a belated gift to the feminist movement. Male-biased evolutionary scenarios-- Man the Hunter, Man the Toolmaker and so on--are being challenged by the discovery that females play a central, perhaps even dominant, role in the social life of one of our nearest relatives. In the past few years many strands of knowledge have come together concerning a relatively unknown ape with an unorthodox repertoire of behavior: the bonobo. The bonobo is one of the last large mammals to be fo Read More

Forensics in Anthropology

Votes:0
Forensic Anthropology Forensic anthropology is the examination of skeletal remains. This examination can be used to first determine if the remains are in fact human. Then the forensic anthropologist can determine the gender, approximate age, physical stature, and likely racial affiliation of the person in life. The examination can also yield approximate time since death, likely cause of death and any identifying illnesses or wounds suffered in life that could leave traces in the bone structure. This information can then be used to help identify the remains. Forensic archaeology uses classic archaeological means for the systematic recovery of buried remains and other artifacts of the burial. Information can also be gleaned by the analysis of pollen, soil, seeds, and insects excavated from t Read More

Looking at chimpanzees ....

This is a homepage of Otto Adang , author of "Teasing, harassment, provocation", "The most powerful chimpanzee in the Netherlands" and adviser to film-maker Bert Haanstra ("The Family of Chimps"). © all text and photos in this site Otto Adang I often had the impression that the bicycle I used to get to the chimpanzee enclosure in Arnhem Zoo was a time machine, taking me five million years back in time. After picking up the key at the entrance to the zoo, I went to the observation room next to the two-acre chimpanzee island. Having entered the observation room, I would open a few windows and wait for the chimpanzees to be released onto the enclosure by the keeper . After having greeted one another they would start another day, leading their own lives, comparabl Read More

Nguoi Rung, Vietnamese Forest People, Wildman: mythical or missing ape Updated: 7 July 1998. There is a report in 1947 from a colonist in Kontum Province, Jules Harrois recording a sighting of "L'Homme Sauvage" among the minority Jarrai, Banhar and Sedang people. In 1982 Professor Tran Hong Viet, now at the Pedagogic University of Hanoi, found and made a cast of a footprint measuring 28 by 16 centimeters. The footprint is as long as that of many people but it is much wider. It is said that the toes of this footprint were much longer than those of a human. The footprint was found on the slopes of Chu Mo Ray (Mom Ray mountain) in the centre of the above picture. Chu Mo Ray is near the Cambodian Border in Sa Thay District of Kontum Province. Professor Viet only recently returned to his resear Read More

An aerial view shows the area of Columbia Park where Kennewick Man was found in July 1996. It started in July 1996 when two young boat-racing enthusiasts stumbled across a skull alongside the Columbia River in Kennewick, Wash . It has evolved into a skirmish between American Indians who believe nature should be left to take its course with the remains and scientists who want to study them. In the middle are the bones of a man believed to have lived 9,200 years ago to the age of 45 who was wounded by a stone projectile. From the skeleton's discovery through the battle over who will gain its control, the Tri-City Herald has been there. This Web site provides an archive of the Herald Read More

By Greta Petry Do men have larger brains than women? University anthropologist Dean Falk is about to publish a scholarly paper that she says will put this subject to rest once and for all. According to Falk, an internationally recognized expert in human brain evolution, it?s true: Men around the world do have bigger brains than women. However, she says, this is nothing for them to get swelled heads about. Male rhesus monkeys also have bigger brains than female rhesus monkeys. Whatever males are using their extra neurons for, she says, it?s not the higher cognitive abilities?like abstract thinking, judgment and reasoning?that separate us from the monkeys and make us distinctly human. Falk is describing research for an article that is being published in the Journal of Human Evolution this sp Read More
