Bay Bridge - San Francisco T his span of the Bay Bridge between San Francisco and Oakland, California, collapsed during the magnitude 7.0 Loma Prieta earthquake on Oct. 17, 1989, which struck just before the first game of the World Series was to be played at San Francisco's Candlestick Park. Although its epicenter was about 100 km south of San Francisco, the Loma Prieta earthquake caused considerable damage in the city and killed 63 people. East-west ground shaking shifted parts of the bridge by as much as 25 cm, shearing bolts and removing support from the fallen span. Photo by E.V. SAN DIEGO-CORONADO BRIDGE This award-winning toll bridge quickly became an area landmark after its opening on August 3, 1969. The distinctive curve and soaring sweep of the San Diego-Coronado Bridge was the first structural conquest of San Diego Bay, joining the Island of Coronado and City of San Diego. The 2.12-mile (11,179-foot) long bridge interchanges with Interstate 5 in San Diego and becomes Route 75 in Coronado. With a vertical clearance of approximately 200 feet, the tallest ships can pass beneath it. Construction of the $50 million bridge began in February 1967. Its distinctive towers and graceful curve brought it the "Most Beautiful Bridge" Award of Merit from the American Institute of Steel Construction in 1970. Daniel's Manhattan Architecture Old Favorites Modern Milestones Apartment Buildings Bridges Early Century Resources Contact x Bridges Manhattan is of course an island, with the East River to the east, The Hudson river to the west, New York Harbor to the south and the Harlem River to the north. Boat and ferry service was unreliable, particularly in winter, when ice jams often prevented boats from crossing. Any crossing of water by a man-made structure would be a huge undertaking. But by the mid-1800's, it became apparent that bridges were necessary, not only for the movement of people, but for the very economic health of the region. Not only did people need to move back and forth between job and home, but goods could be transported into and out of Manhattan much more easily. The constructio Read More

View all traffic for the Philadelphia area This 2003 photo was taken from the southbound span of the Delaware Memorial Bridge (I-295 and US 40). (Photo by Jim K. Georges.) FULFILLING A LONG-SOUGHT DREAM: Since the 1920's, residents of Delaware and New Jersey had pressured officials for a fixed crossing between southern New Jersey and the Wilmington-New Castle area of Delaware. With the successful opening of the new Delaware River (Benjamin Franklin) Bridge some 30 miles upstream in Philadelphia, such a crossing appeared feasible. The proposed Delaware-New Jersey span was estimated to cost $12 million. As an interim measure, the two states established a ferry service between Pennsville, New Jersey and New Castle, Delaware (near the site of the current bridge) in 1926. The Golden Gate Bridge was opened to the public on May 27, 1937, a year after the opening of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. For the first time, pedestrians and land vehicles traveled between Marin County and San Francisco. The bridge has a length of 4,600 feet (1,400 meters) and the towers rise 746 feet (227 meters). Each cable contains 27,572 parallel wires that are 7,659 feet (2,335 meters) long. That's a total wire length of 39,995 Miles (64,381 Km) per cable. High Bridge, Kentucky

High Bridge is a Jessamine county community on the Kentucky River at the end of KY 29 about four miles southwest of Wilmore. It is just below the confluence of the Kentucky and Dix Rivers across from Shaker Landing. The train station that operated at the site from 1877 until sometime in the early twentieth century was known as The Towers. A North Tower post office opened in 1877 and was renamed High Bridge around 1887. It closed in 1976. High Bridge carries the railroad over the Kentucky River. A bridge was begun in the 1850s for the Lexington and Danville Railroad. It was to be a suspension bridge, designed by John A. Roebling, but was never completed. (The towers for the suspension cables were built and remained until 1929.) A bridge of cantilever design was finally opened in 1877 on the Read More

PEI's Confederation Bridge

PEI's Confederation Bridge The Spectacular Confederation Bridge Prince Edward Island joined the Canadian Confederation in 1873 and at that time, the Federal Government promised the Islanders continuous transport between PEI and the mainland. In the early years, this was sometimes threatening to life and limb, particularly in winter when small boats were muscled over and through the ice of Northumberland Strait linking New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. By 1917, a permanent ferry service was implemented across the Northumberland Strait which lasted for more than 80 years. However, lobbying for a bridge crossing for vehicles has been a factor for many years and finally, the technology of the 90's made the construction of almost a 13 kilometer bridge possible. Quebec Bridge Introduction

THE QUEBEC BRIDGE On December 3, 1917, after almost 20 years of planning and construction, the Quebec Bridge opened for traffic. A major engineering feat in its day, it still stands as one of the world's great bridges. Two major collapses during construction resulted in heavy loss of life. This exhibit, with parts taken from a book titled "The Quebec Bridge" by the St. Lawrence Bridge Company, is an attempt to preserve some of history of that great undertaking. Elevation The Collapse of August 29, 1907 It took only fifteen seconds for the massive south arm of the Quebec Bridge to fall into the St. Lawrence River in 1907, but the prelude to the catastrophe began years before. -- by John Tarkov See A Disaster in the Making , a Engineering Case Library case study of the collapse. These simulations show the possible East Span alignment alternatives and design variations which are evaluated in the DEIS. The Visual Impact Assessment quantifies the visual impact that the bridge variations would have in the larger visual context of the Bay Area. The visual simulations typically show the alignment alternative (either N6 or S4) which is closest to each viewpoint. SEISMIC INSTRUMENTATION OF THE KEALAKAHA BRIDGE PROJECT SUMMARY The existing bridge over the Kealakaha Stream on the island of Hawaii is scheduled for replacement. The new bridge will be a 645 foot long structure, designed and built to withstand all anticipated loads, including earthquake ground shaking. Because of the bridges location on the seismically active island of Hawaii, it represents an ideal opportunity for the first seismic instrumentation of a major bridge structure in the State of Hawaii. The instrumentation program outlined in this proposal was based on observations from a number of CSMIP instrumented bridges. The procedure followed in developing the proposed instrumentation is detailed in a University of Hawaii Civil Engineering Report UHM/CE/96-04 (Stephens and Robertson, 1 Read More

For years, it had been clear to State officials that the Narrows would have to be bridged in order to open up the spectacular and thinly populated Peninsula. Aware of this situation, the Washington State Legislature created the Washington Toll Bridge Authority in 1937, with a mandate to finance, construct and operate toll bridges. The first Tacoma Narrows Bridge was revolutionary in its design and historic in its collapse. The failure on November 7, 1940 marked the end of a trend in bridge engineering towards a maximum of lightness, grace and flexibility. Since the turn of the century, suspension bridge c Read More

Test Shared Vision - Community Bridge Project

Votes:0
Well, OK, the bridge is a real bridge. But none of the stonework on this bridge is real. The Community Bridge mural project transformed this plain concrete bridge in Frederick, Maryland, near Washington D.C., into the stunning illusion of an old stone bridge. The entire structure was painted by hand by an artist and his assistants, using advanced trompe l'oeil ("deceive the eye") techniques. What is perhaps most unusual is that the bridge contains ideas, symbols and stories contributed by thousands of people from all over the community , across the country , and around the world . These co-creators have made Community Bridge an inspiring symbol of common ground. The bridge has many unusual features and symbols , and its imagery is rich with stories. There is an archangel whose appearence i Read More

The Metropolis Observed: the war of the peace bridge

subscribe | about | current | events | conferences | search | designmart | search/archives One scheme for the Buffalo-Fort Erie Peace bridge would invoke the city's history in a literal way with a straightforward industrial span, top. A competing, grander scheme, above, would place a single 450-foot stanchion exactly above the U.S.-Canada border. Competing proposals for an international span test popular interest in design. by Robert Neuwirth F or the past year, Buffalo, New York, has been embroiled in an intense debate about whether fancy design can help revitalize a dying region. At stake was the future of the Peace Bridge -- a 71-year-old span that links the city to Fort Erie, Ontario, across both the Niagara River and the Black Rock Channel shipping lane. The Tacoma Narrows Bridge Disaster, November 1940

Tacoma Narrows Bridge Disaster Stuart Doole was a fomer postdoc working with John Hogan on the dynamics of a peicewise linear model of a suspension bridge. An early preprint is available online . Contact John Hogan for more recent work , including a model that supports the transition between purely vertical oscillations and torsional modes, a feature that was observed in the collapse of the bridge. Also Alan Champneys has collaborated with Joe McKenna now of the University of Cork on the propensity of such simple models to support solitary waves; preprint 1 , preprint 2 Part of the motivation for this work was to provide a simple dynamical-systems explanation of the bi-stability and transition between modes observed in the famous collapse of the Tacoma Narrows suspension bridge. For most of the state's history, the only way to travel between the peninsulas was by boat. At best, crossing the Straits of Mackinac by railroad car ferry took one hour. Sometimes, especially during the peak vacation and deer hunting seasons, people waited as long as 8 to 12 hours. Cars might be backed up 15 miles down the highway. In 1950 Governor G. Mennen Williams appointed the Mackinac Bridge Authority with former U. S. Senator Prentiss M. Brown of St. Ignace as chairman. Work on the suspensi Read More

The Zoarville Station Bridge at Camp Tuscazoar is the only Fink Through-Truss bridge known to exist in the United States.
