FRtR > Biographies > Adam Smith Biography of Adam Smith (1723-1790) *** Quote *** Adam Smith was a Scottish political economist and philosopher. He has become famous by his influential book The Wealth of Nations (1776). Smith was the son of the comptroller of the customs at Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland. The exact date of his birth is unknown. However, he was baptized at Kirkcaldy on June 5, 1723, his father having died some six months previously. At the age of about fifteen, Smith proceeded to Glasgow university, studying moral philosophy under "the never-to-be-forgotten" Francis Hutcheson (as Smith called him). In 1740 he entered Balliol college, Oxford, but as William Robert Scott has said, "the Oxford of his time gave little if any help towards what was to be his lifework," and he relinqui Read More

Intro to James Herriot

Welcome to my page dedicated to the life and writings of James Herriot First, let me tell you a little about how this page came to be. My name is Heather Mazzaccaro and I'm a vet student studying at Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine in Boston, MA. When I was in fourth grade my mother handed me a well worn paperback and told me that I should enjoy this one, it had animals in it. Being the animal lover that I am, I dove into it and once I started, there was no stopping me. I had the book read in no time. The title of the book was All Creatures Great and Small by James Herriot. That Christmas I received the whole boxed set of James Herriot's works and diligently read through those as well. It was during this time that I made up my mind to pursue a veterinary career. It was spring Read More

All rights reserved Robert Burns Robert Burns (1759-1796) is considered Scotland's greatest poet. Best known for his feeling descriptions of country life and for satires against the political and religious hypocrisy of the day, Burns wrote much of his poetry in his broad Scots dialect . The eldest child of William and Agnes Burnes (the elder Burnes spelled his name with an "e"), Burns was born in Ayrshire and lived a life of hard labor and poverty as he struggled with his father to make a series of poor farms productive. By 1786, with his father dead, and more failed farms to the family credit, Burns nearly emigrated to Jamaica. His first volume of Read More

The bottle imp (1893) by Robert Louis Stevenson

The following is a Gaslight etext.... A message to you about copyright and permissions There was a man of the Island of Hawaii, whom I shall call Keawe; for the truth is, he still lives, and his name must be kept secret; but the place of his birth was not far from Honaunau, where the bones of Keawe the Great lie hidden in a cave. This man was poor, brave, and active; he could read and write like a schoolmaster; he was a first-rate mariner besides, sailed for some time in the island steamers, and steered a whaleboat on the Hamakua coast. At length it came in Keawe's mind to have a sight of the great world and foreign cities, and he shipped on a vessel bound to San Francisco. This is a fine town, with a fine harbour, and rich people uncountable; and in particular, there is one hill which is Read More
