It is bound by Latvia to the south, Russia to the east, the Baltic Sea to the west and the Gulf of Finland to the north. In general, the country is low lying with ridges and hills that rise in the interior and to the southeast. Sharply indented cliffs line a narrow, low lying strip along the northeast coast whilst a broad plain along the west coast is low and sandy.
