Alaska's Blooming Beauties

Image by Jeremy Welcome to Alaska’s Blooming Beauties! We have been learning about Alaska and wanted to learn about wildflowers but couldn't find anything in the kids section at the library, or on the web, on this topic so we decided to make a helpful webpage. Our focus is for kids like us to learn about Alaska’s wildflowers in a fun way. We also tried to make this site teacher friendly and useful. We were fortunate enough to be able to attend a college lecture by Verna Pratt, a well known Naturalist in the Anchorage area. Although there are over 1,500 species of wild flowers in Alaska, we chose our favorites to give you a glimpse of Alaska’s vast beauty. You can enjoy these flowers in many national parks and areas throughout the State, but please don’t pick them becaus Read More

SF Bay Area Wildflowers The purpose of this page is to provide a framework for collecting pictures and descriptions of the wildflowers I've seen on my hikes in 1995. The source: Spring Wildflowers of the San Francisco Bay Region . My favorite book for learning to identify SF Bay Area wildflowers by picture is Plants of the Coastal Redwoods . The color is wonderful. I used it to learn in two ways. The first was just going out on the trail, finding a flower, skipping to the right color section in the book, and flipping the pages like mad until I found what I was looking at. Later on, when I started yearning to see a particular new flower I'd note that it liked a particular microbiotic community e.g. Redwood Forest, then I'd choose my hikes accordingly. Later on, I used Wildflowers of the Wes Read More

The returned interest towards prairie plants and wildflowers signifies a movement in landscape design towards a more naturalized landscape. Using native species to recreate plant and wildlife communities only makes sense. WEED MANAGEMENT FOR WILDFLOWERS

September 1993 LEAFLET NO: 645 WEED MANAGEMENT FOR WILDFLOWERS Lena Gallitano, W.A. Skroch, D.A. Bailey The use of wildflowers in the landscape has increased since Lady Bird Johnson first promoted them in the late 1960's and early 1970's. Wildflowers were further popularized by the "Meadow in a Can" seed collections that were marketed in the early 1980's. A number of books have been written that describe methods for planning and planting wildflowers, however, few recommendations are available regarding maintenance and long-term weed management. In wildflower plantings, weed management is a complex system that requires knowledge of the specific wildflowers and weeds, environmental conditions, and control methods. Therefore, the objective of this leaflet is to discuss weed management strateg Read More

Wildflower and Prairie Grass Seed by Prairie Frontier

Wildflowers and prairie grasses possess a stature and strength that provide a glimpse of the past and open a door to our future. The tallest of plants may be seen waving boldly as gentle breezes stir their tops while the shorter species provide even more cover and beauty in a natural setting. It is both simple and rewarding to create an environment that is colorful, multi-dimensional and beneficial to the world around us. When planting wildflowers and/or prairie grasses you are inviting habitat for wildlife, butterflies and birds. You can create a beautiful easy to maintain landscape that will return to delight you year after year. Many wildflowers prefer low fertility or are tolerant to droughts, so there is less stress than some other types of gardening. By planting wildflowers and/or pr Read More

In the San Gabriels Mountains, blooming plants can be found most of the year. The higher elevations are best for wildflowers in August and September. Flowers on the north-facing slopes will bloom later than those on the south-facing ones.
