Mathematically Correct is the informal, nationwide organization that fights the Establishment on behalf of sanity and quality in math education. -- David Gelernter, NY Post Mathematics achievement in America is far below what we would like it to be. Recent " reform " efforts only aggravate the problem. As a result, our children have less and less exposure to rigorous, content-rich mathematics . The advocates of the new, fuzzy math have practiced their rhetoric well. They speak of higher-order thinking, conceptual understanding and solving problems, but they neglect Read More

Contact_FullName: Vicky Contact_Email: vanclan@dwave.net date:: 01/19/02 Area: Learning centers Idea: For years I placed the wooden puzzles in my classroom, and encouraged my children to go put a puzzle together. I came up with an idea several years ago that works great and creates a reason/motivation for the children to go put together puzzles. I purchased a couple 3 minute egg timers (the kind where the children can see the sand running through the glass). Then I made a book called "Beat The Timer Club" I made a list of the children's names, then a made30 copies of this list as that is how many wooden puzzles I have and I numbered the pages like a book. Next I put a little sticker on each wooden puzzle giving it a number from 1-30. The children know that they can go to the cent Read More

MINSE: the easiest way to put math on the Web Mathematics has arrived on the Web at last... --> The goal of this project is to bring the power of mathematical expression to as many people as possible, and as quickly and easily as possible. The proposed medium is a semantic expression notation called MINSE designed for this purpose. But a language alone is not enough: with this design comes a deployed implementation that immediately makes expressions a reality for the scientific and mathematical Internet community. This implementation shows that it's possible even without any support from browser software. In fact, however, it began with the revival of several tremendously important and formidably difficult works of Greek science. The mathematics and astronomy of the Greeks had been known in medieval western Europe only through often imperfect translations, some of them made from Arabic intermediary texts rather than the Greek originals. The papal curia became a center for the recovery of the original Greek manuscripts, often very old and remarkably elegant, and the production of new translations of these works. PROJECT INFORMATION MathWorld Interactive, a project by Carolynn S. Mortensen, began as MathMagic FidoNet in 1991, and was an interactive project on the Math Forum site through May 30, 1999. In June, 2002, Carolynn re-launched the project but found it necessary to close it again in November, 2002. The interactive site was dedicated to helping educators and parents motivate their students to solve open-ended word problems, communicate mathematically, and share cultural and geographical information. Participating were students from all over the world working on open-ended word problems (levels: K-3, 4-6, 7-8, 9-12) called MathWorld Interactive Challenges. The Challenge Cycle started every 12 weeks and the students followed a specific problem-solving format. The archived questions and submitt Read More

We generally separate the two numbers in the ratio with a colon (:). Suppose we want to write the ratio of 8 and 12. We can write this as 8:12 or as a fraction 8/12, and we say the ratio is eight to twelve . Examples: Jeannine has a bag with 3 videocassettes, 4 marbles, 7 books, and 1 orange. 1) What is the ratio of books to marbles? Expressed as a fraction, with the numerator equal to the first quantity and the denominator equal to the second, the answer would be 7/4. Two other ways Read More

When the money is paid back, the principal (amount of money that was borrowed) and the interest is paid back. The amount to interest depends on the interest rate, the amount of money borrowed (principal) and the length of time that the money is borrowed. The formula for finding simple interest is: Interest = Principal * Rate * Time. If $100 was borrowed for 2 years at a 10% interest rate, the interest would be $100*10/100*2 = $20. The total amount that would be due would be $100+$20=$120. Simple interest is generally charged for borrowing money for short periods of time. C Read More

That was in 1995, and all links to their own pages are broken now, but that certificate was never revoked, so I think I can still wear it with pride. But I'm afraid that since their comment on my page has disappeared into the byte void, you will have to read this page for yourself. However, I am still listed and credited as one of the most useless pages on the net. Find me as one of Paul's Retired Pages . Welcome to the Hotel Infinity Infinity is for Children---and Mathematicians! How Big is Infinity? Most everyone is familiar with the infinity symbol--the one that looks like the number eight tipped over on its side. The infinite sometimes crops up in everyday speech as a superlative form of the word many . But how many is infinitely many? How far away is "from here to infinity"? How big is infinity? You can't count to infinity. Yet we are comfortable with the idea that there are infinitely many numbers to count with: no matter how big a number you might come up with, someone else can come up with a bigger one: that number plus one--or plus two, or times two. Or times itself. There simply is no biggest number. Is there? Is infinity a number? Is there anything bigger than infinity? How about Read More
