They worked with Miss Ruth Weyland and Mrs. Terry Hongell to create this guide. The children studied about Tibet and about Buddhism in order to understand more about the art works in the exhibit, "The Buddha's Art of Healing." or interference. Art educators have long argued against the practice of giving young children art

Votes:0 Permanent Collection : Ancient Egyptian Art The collection of Ancient Egyptian and Nubian antiquities at the Michael C. Carlos Museum covers the full spectrum of Nile Valley civilization, from the earliest Prehistoric times, to the period of Roman domination. At the core of the collection are the artifacts acquired by Emory professor William Shelton, who traveled to Egypt in 1920. The collection has experienced tremendous growth, beginning in 1999 with the purchase of Egyptian antiquities from a small, private museum in Niagara Falls, Canada. The objects from the Niagara Falls Museum had been purchased in Egypt during the early 1860s, and include ten mummies, nine coffins, and a variety of other artifacts. The Niagara collection consists primarily of funerary material from the 21st Dynasty Read More Go to Site

Votes:0 Foreword To welcome Georgetown's students and faculty back to campus for the 2000-2001 academic year, and to greet our many friends who enjoy coming to see our exhibitions, the Special Collections Division of the Lauinger Library presents this exhibition entitled "Printmakers A to Z: Selections from Georgetown's Collections." Our students may find a hidden metaphor for this new academic year in four of the exhibition's prints. It begins with Louis Rhead's "Midsummer Holiday" now come to an end, replaced by Louis Schanker's "Acrobats" struggling with the onset of Fall Semester class loads and their inevitable exams, culminating in Ronau Woiceske's "Deep Winter" with its Christmas holidays and the inter-semester break. Votes:0 About Symmetry and Pattern Rug Gallery About Oriental Carpets Educational Resources About This Web Site ORIENTAL CARPETS have long been appreciated for their beauty. That beauty is
achieved through the choice of colors and designs, as well as by the
manipulation of designs and colors
to form pleasing patterns. Patterns in Oriental carpets are never quite what you
expect - a surprise here, a flourish there, a change of color,
the flip or rotation of a design where you might not predict it. The more
you look, the more variations you will find. How can we explain this phenomenon? Is it the result of
human choice, or human error? The study of symmetry offers one approach to analyzing patterns in
Oriental carpets. Through symmetry analysis we
may identify areas of pattern that exhibit expected Read More Go to Site
Votes:0 The Alphabet of Art The Robert J. McKnight Memorial Web Site Welcome to the Alphabet of Art. This site explains, in simple terms, the elements of visual design. Once you understand the Alphabet, you'll be able to "read" pictures and other works of visual art and understand why they work the way they do. The Alphabet of Art was developed by the late Robert J. McKnight, a sculptor, designer, and theoretician of art. McKnight believed that the historical development of communication systems paralleled the development of the senses in the individual. Just as a newborn child orients itself to the world first by touch, then hearing, and only later by eyesight, so objective systems of communication developed in that order. First came the numerical system, based on our fingers and the sense of tou Read More Go to Site

Votes:0 Ferrets in Art History This is from an illuminated manuscript from France. THE HUNTING BOOK (also known as (THE BOOK OF THE HUNT, or GASTON PHOEBUS' BOOK OF THE HUNT, etc.) was written by Gaston Pheobus, the Count of Foix and Viscount of Bearn. He was born in 1331, wrote this book sometime between May 1387 and his death in 1391. He was well-known for being an excellent huntsman, putting on good parties, and for being an all-round great guy. He wrote this book to explain how to hunt different kinds of animals, how to handle dogs, set up blinds, etc. The plate shown here illustrates how to use ferrets to hunt rabbits, and shows the hunters putting muzzled ferrets down rabbit holes, waiting for the rabbits to pop out the other end and into the nets. For a detailed close-up of the ferret, clic Read More Go to Site
